8 Explaining the war in Ukraine - the collapse of the Soviet Union

In this episode in my mini-series that sets out to explain the war in Ukraine, I’m going to jump forward from Stalin’s Russia to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. This was something that was remarkable in a number of ways: its apparent suddenness, its unexpectedness, and, of course, its game-changing, epoch-changing nature.
